Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said today that his country is ready to respond positively if US President Barack Obama’s promises of foreign policy changes are genuine.

Mottaki told a session on Central Asia and the Caucasus at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2009 that the countries of the region are waiting to see how the changes are put into effect to determine if they are strategic, tactical or just rhetorical.

„We do believe that if the new administration of the United States, as President Obama has said, is going to change its policies, not in talking but in acts, then definitely it will find in the region a creative and cooperative reaction, including from Iran,“ he said.

Mottaki said that throughout his country’s entire 3,000-year history Iran has played a positive and constructive role in relations with its neighbours and other countries, based on peaceful coexistence.

Iran has followed this policy in Iraq where it has sought to help create „the stability and security which we consider to be in our interests, as well as in those of other countries in the region,“ the Foreign Minister added.
